By a member of the Yamamoto Shunsho
family, probably Edo period (1615-1868),
early/mid 19th century
Lacquered in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e,
and togidashi maki-e with highlights of kirikane
with a ferryman attempting to pole a pilgrim
passenger on board a boat between several
other moored boats during a sudden torrential
storm; signed on the underside in silver
lacquer low relief Shunsho with a red seal;
with a wood storage box inscribed on the lid
Suzuributa (A writing box cover functioning as
a food serving tray). 3.2cm x 26.3cm x 24cm
(1¼in x 10 3/8in x 9½in). (2).

late 19th/early 20th century
The rectangular structure supported on four
short feet, pierced on four sides and on the
reverse with a kidney-shaped panels, fitted
with two removable drawers, decorated in
gold takamaki-e and nashiji, the top surface
with a cockerel perched on a brushwood
fence, the sides with seasonal flowers, the
front of the drawers with bands of repeated
geometric motifs; unsigned.

or Meiji era (1868-1912), mid/late 19th century
Comprising two gold-lacquer vessels, one
three-tiered lobed rectangular kobako for
holding the incense, and a kikikoro (incense
‘listening’ vessel) for containing the gin’yo
(literally ‘silver leaves’, framed squares of
mica) on which the incense is heated, each
embellished with a matching design in gold
hiramaki-e with assorted crests on a hanabishi
(flowery-diamond) ground, the small, slender,
shibuichi reticulated kyoji-tate (implement
stand) engraved with foliate motifs, unsigned;
with a lacquered wood storage box.
Each vessel approx., 7cm (2¾in) high. (9).
