A blue and white deep bowl with
sanduo decoration
18th century
Painted in a combination of outline,
wash and dotting with a lingzhi fungus
band below the rim and a peony
medallion centering the floor of the well
while branches of peach, pomegranate
and Buddha’s hand citron (the Three
Abundances) appear on the exterior walls
between a dense leaf and flower head
band at the rim and a jeweled lappet band
rising from the tall foot, the lustrous glaze
covering all surfaces except the pad of the
tall foot ring.

Kangxi period
The first blue and white lotus bowl molded in
relief with twelve petal-shaped reserves and a
conforming foliate rim, the exterior walls filled
with depictions of the Eight Immortals and
other auspicious figures standing in reserves
above the raised petals filled with seasonal
flowers, the interior decorated with a cash-
diaper pattern and centered with an immortal
carrying a peach while the deeply recessed
base bears the six-character Chenghua mark
inscribed in regular script within a double
ring, the lustrous glaze covering all surfaces
except the narrow foot pad; the second a
blue and white bottle vase painted with a
bamboo branch blowing in the wind above
a continuous landscape of rocks rising from
a waterway with a boatman on his skiff, all
under a lustrous glaze

The near pair decorated in gradated hues of
deep cobalt blue, surmounted by domical
lids displaying two boys holding a wrapped
zither (qin) and a lotus leaf, atop shoulders
displaying wide and ornate ruyi-lappet bands
of vine and lotus motifs above detailed
continuous figural tableaux of scholar/officials
accompanied by beauties and attendants
within elaborate interior and exterior settings,
the recessed clear glazed bases unmarked
and centered by a double ring.
