A blue and white porcelain vase with composite flower and leafy
tendril decoration
Qianlong six-character mark and of the period
Displaying a ground-down rim to the curving shoulder that joins the canted walls of the body
with a rounded edge, both surfaces painted in rich cobalt hues with composite flowers issuing
from curling leafy stems, the band around the widest part of the body composed of flower heads
within facing C-scrolls, descending cloud-collar lappets and lacy leaf scrolls while jeweled lotus
petals form the band above the wedged foot, the recessed base drilled through the mark written
in seal script and the celadon-tinged glaze applied everywhere except the foot pad.
11 3/8in (28.8cm) high
$20,000 - 30,000
The distinctive angular profile of this lot recurs in three other Qianlong period vases illustrated
in Gugong Bowuyuan Cang Wenwu Zhenpin Quanji 36: Qinghua Youlihong 3 (The Complete
Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 36: Blue and White Porcelain with
Underglaze Red, book 3), 2010: two of the vases show similar hollow tubular handles applied
the cylindrical neck (nos. 130 and 131, pp. 144-145); the third vase is topped with a garlic-
shape head (no. 121, p.134). The garlic-headed vase is of particular interest as it shares a
decorative program similar to this lot, to include the flower and leaf panels as well as similar
lacy lappet bands around the garlic head, shoulder and upper body.
However the closest parallel to the original shape of this lot is a vase with dish-shaped mouth,
pankou zun, first offered in the Beijing Hanhai sale of 11 May 2008, lot 2180, and again in
Beijing Hanhai sale of 19 May 2011, lot 2334 (both sales listing the vase and 38.1cm high).
The neck of the Hanhai vase is encircled with a xiangcai band at the rim, stiff leaves rising
above a band of waves at the neck and the remaining decorative motifs very similar but not
identical to that of this lot.
