A mourning women adjacent to a large stone urn and weeping willow
tree became popular imagery in American folk art as well as common
subject matter for women’s embroidery in late 18th century and
especially in the years following the death of George Washington in
1799. At times these images would memorialize the first United States
president, although they were also created in memory of friends and
family members.
