R. Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers:
Chinese Brown-and Black Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Cambridge,
Massachusetts, 1996, no. 31, where the author states that the
white rim on bowls of this type was inspired by the silver
bands affxed to Ding and other ‘aristocratic’ wares of the Song
dynasty. The author further notes that this practice of imitating
silver or gold bands on ceramic vessels began at least as early as
the Han dynasty (206 BC - AD 220).
