A gilt bronze figure of Tsongkhapa
19th century
The Buddhist guru clad in robes, seated in padmasana on a lotus
throne, the hands in dharmachakra mudra, the serene face topped
with a pandita hat, the shoulders flanked by a book and sword of
wisdom atop lotus flowers, fabric stand.

Tsongkhapa (1379-1419) was a Tibetan philosopher who published
many influential texts and founded a powerful monastery in Lhasa.
In 1407 and 1413 he was invited to the Imperial court in Beijing by
Emperor Yongle who extensively patronised Buddhism in China. As an
iconic figure he was the centre of the Gelugpa sect which ruled Tibet
until 1951.
