The lid and box embellished on each side with
foliate cartouches enclosing writhing dragons
and mythical beasts, all reserved on a diaper
ground, with pomegranate-shaped hinges
and lockplate, the silver mounts stamped for
Birmingham 1911; together with a Korean
qingbai-style glazed oviform jar.

For a rectangular box, of similar form, also
with slightly domed cover and attributed
to the Choson era, see Christie’s South
Kensington, 10/03/05, lot 40. Whilst it is
known that these boxes date back at least
to the Koryo era, their usage is less certain
although Jane Portal in Korea Art and
Archaeology British Museum Press 2000,
p99, highlights the suggestion that they may
have been manufactured to contain copies of
the printed Tripitaka Koreana.
