China, 618-907. The horse standing on a flat rectangular base, the
rider wearing a prominent helmet and playing a flute.

Condition: Patina, wear, losses, and chipping, as expected on an
excavation of this age.
Provenance: Austrian private collection.

China, 7th century. The horse superbly modeled standing with its Starting price EUR 1.500,-
four feet on a flat base, with a large saddle and an upright head
with expressive eyes.

Condition: Patina, wear, losses, chipping, generally fine and as
expected on an excavation of this age.
Provenance: Belgian private collection, previously in the collection
of Dr. P. Bernades, most likely acquired before 1965. Includes
French appraisal documents from Michel Cohen as well as a TL-Test
conducted by Laboratory Ralf Kotalla (no. 010431) confirming the
piece’s age of around 1,350 years.

China, 618-907. The camel standing on a flat rectangular base,

carrying a heavy saddle and with its head turned upwards with
clenched teeth, giving the camel an almost fierce expression. This
piece was probably excavated at Luoyang, one of the Four Great
Ancient Capitals of China.
Condition: Remains of old cold painting, patina, wear, losses,
chipping, and old repairs, as expected on an excavation of this age.
Provenance: German private collection, acquired in 2008 at
Chinese Arts Gallery in Hong Kong.

391 | A TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A HORSE
AND RIDER, NORTHERN WEI
China, 386-534. The figure with well-preserved original cold painting
showing a characteristic depiction of a warrior wearing armor all
around on a caparisoned horse on a flat rectangular base. This
piece is similar to others found in excavations around Cixian in
Hebei Province.

Condition: Excellent condition considering the age of this piece
with wear, chipping and losses.
Provenance: Austrian private collection. Acquired from Galerie
Zacke before 2005. A copy of the original expertise by Galerie Zacke
dated April 2004 is accompanying this lot.

Dimensions: Height 26.8 cm.
The Northern Wei was a foreign dynasty founded by the Tuoba
(Tabgach) clan of the Xianbei, an ancient nomadic people. Their
rather small horses, like the present figure, were fast and high-
stamina nomadic animals.
