collection, which includes almost 45,000 objects and spans 6,000 years of
achievement in the arts. The Cleveland Museum of Art opened its doors in 1916, is . .
considered one of the top comprehensive art museums in the nation.

Works of Indian and Southeast Asian art were among the initial holdings of the
Cleveland Museum of Art. With the addition of exceptional acquisitions identi ed
by Howard Hollis, the museum s rst Curator of Oriental Art from 1929 to 1949;
and most notably by Dr. Sherman E. Lee, rst as curator then as director between
1952 and 1983; further augmented by renowned curator Dr. Stanislaw Czuma
and his successor Dr. Sonya Rhie Quintanilla, the Indian and Southeast Asian
collection grew to rank among the highest in quality and importance in the United
States. This collection consists of works from three broad geographical areas:
India, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas. Known best for its masterworks of
monumental sculpture from the historical periods, with special areas of strength
in Tibetan, Indian, Nepalese and Khmer stone and bronze sculpture and painting,
the Museum also has an important early Mughal Indian manuscript of the
Tuti-nama, as well as the recently acquired Catherine Glynn Benkaim and Ralph
Benkaim Collection of Mughal and Deccan paintings.
