PROVENANCE
Acquired Roland Koscherak Gallery, New York, 1970s, by
repute.
Detailed in the Buddhist Pali canon, the Avadana legends
chronicle the past lives of Buddhist gures and link past karmic
events to future life stories. These canonized legends were
summarized in the eleventh century in a treatise known as
Leaves of the Heaven Tree, by the Kashmiri poet Kshemendra.
Another thangka from this set, detailing a further Avadana
legend, was sold at Sotheby’s New York, 24 March 2011, lot 83.

GUARDIAN KINGS

The arhat Gopaka is seated in rajalilasana at upper left, holding
a pustakam in the left hand. The arhat Abheda is seated upright
at upper right, holding a stupa aloft. The attendant Dharmatala
standing at center, holding the y whisk in the right hand and
two kalasha in the left, wearing a pack lled with pustakam and

 tted with a parasol. Dhritarashtra the Guardian of the Eastern
Direction is at lower left holding a vina, and Vaishravana the
Guardian of the Northern Direction is at lower right holding a
sta in the raised right hand and a mongoose in the left.
