each with shallow rounded sides resting on a short foot, the
exterior decorated with nine dragons soaring in different
positions amidst ruyi clouds and flames, all picked out in black
and green enamels against a bright yellow ground, two pairs
of the mythical beasts depicted chasing a ‘flaming pearl’ on
opposite sides, the white base inscribed in iron red with a four-
character Shendetang zhi hall mark
16 cm, 6¼ in.

This type of dishes is very rare, but at least one other pair
appears to be known, sold at Christie’s New York, 21st
September 2004, lot 323.
