the ruyi-shaped terminal surmounted by a
bat deftly worked in high relief with its wings
outstretched, above a beribboned musical chime
(qing) suspending a double lozenge atop a pair
of entwined catfish, the curved shaft inscribed
with four seal characters reading Jixiang ruyi
(‘auspicious as you wish’), its pointed end
decorated with a bat grasping a spray of nandina
berries, the concave reverse with clusters of
scrolling clouds, the stone of an even pale
celadon tone
