The Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety were first enumerated by Guo
Jijing in a Yuan dynasty text, although they derive from much older
anecdotes of men and women who stood as exemplars of Confucian
virtue. Whereas other bottles illustrating Paragons of Filial Piety are
extant (see Michael C. Hughes The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin,
Chinese Snuff Bottles, p. 276 no 213) it is rare to have all twenty-four
individuals illustrated on two bottles.
