49 Deriving from a Tatsag lineage set, the subject of this painting is
A THANGKA OF THE EIGHTH TATSAG the Eighth Tatsag Yeshe Lobzang Tenpai Gonpo (1760-1810),
Eastern Tibet, late 18th century appearing here with his teacher above him, the Eighth Dalai Lama
Distemper on cloth; two red pigment handprints verso; Jampal Gyatso (1758-1804). The two in fact imbue the thangka’s
recto and verso with identifying Tibetan inscriptions in gold. reverse with their handprints. In 1772, the Qianlong Emperor
Image: 26 1/4 x 17 in. (66.8 x 43.2 cm) (r.1735-1799) named him a ‘lama of the seal’ (tham gab la ma), the
$10,000 - 15,000 highest imperial designation given to Tibetan and Mongolian lamas.
