AN OPENWORK JADE ‘CHILONG
AND MONKEY’ SCABBARD CHAPE
WESTERN HAN DYNASTY (206 BC-AD 8)
The flat trapezoidal chape is carved to depict a dragon clambering
on the top while peering over the edge, with its sinuous body and
long scrolling tail, falling on both sides of the surface. A monkey is
further carved with its arm outstretched, hanging from one edge.
The base is drilled with a hole for attachment.
