A blue and white soft-paste ‘Three Abundances’ vase
The painting on the exterior refers to the story of the Daoist Immortals Qianlong
crossing the East Sea, 八仙过海 ba xian guo hai. The legend is that The slightly-tapered body rising to a waisted neck and everted
when they come to the East Sea, Lü Dongbin suggests that each of rim, painted with three branches of sanduo comprising peach,
the Immortals use his own individual abilities to cross the sea, and pomegranate and finger citron, each branch bearing five fruits, all
thus each figure throws down his attribute to ride upon, with some between bands of ruyi-heads and upright lappets beneath borders of
transforming into sea monsters. The story can be interpreted as each leaves and scrolls at the neck. 26.5cm (10 1/2in) high
member of a group making a distinctive contribution to collective
success. It is unusual to find such a fine example of bowls of this type £4,000 - 7,000 CNY40,000 - 69,000
with a Qianlong seal mark and of the period. A larger bowl with similar HK$50,000 - 88,000
decoration but with a hall mark Gongshoutang zhi (made in the Hall of
Venerating Old Age) and attributed to mid-19th century, is illustrated 清乾隆 漿胎青花三多紋瓶
by R.Krahl and C.von Spee in Chinese Ceramics from the Gulexuan

Geng Baochang mentions these bowls as in use from the Qianlong Roy Davids Collection, no. 54, acquired on 11 May 2010
period: see Geng Baochang, Ming Qing ciqi jianding, Hong Kong,
1993, p.383. The decoration on the present lot expresses the wish for an
abundance of blessings, long life and sons. The Three Abundances
fushou sanduo 福壽三多 are represented by the Budhha’s Hand
citron, the peach and the pomegranate. The finger citron symbolizes
abundant blessings, the peach represents abundant longevity and the
pomegranate stands for many sons.
