A yellow-glazed incised ‘phoenix’ saucer dish S.H.Ng, London
Incised Jiajing six-character mark and of the period Desmond R.Laurence Collection, no.334, acquired in 1987
The gently rounded sides rising to an everted rim, covered Roy Davids Collection, no.21, acquired on 20 October 2001
overall in a yellow glaze, the interior finely incised with phoenix
among clouds. It is unusual to find incised decoration with phoenix,
29cm (11 1/2in) diam. representing the Empress, rather then the dragon
representing the Emperor himself. A related yellow-glazed
£4,000 - 7,000 CNY40,000 - 69,000 dish incised with dragons, also incised Jiajing mark and of
HK$50,000 - 88,000 the period, in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art,
is now in the British Museum, reference PDF.554. See also
