A CARVED TIXI CINNABAR LACQUER WATER COUPE
Late Ming dynasty, 17th century
The domed body with a central aperture at the top and set over a
slightly wider foot, the sides carefully carved through multiple layers of
black and cinnabar lacquer with large ruyi heads, the interior and base
lacquered black.

A LACQUER FAUX-CORAL ‘TREE AND LINGZHI’ IN A
LACQUERED JARDINIÉRE
18th/19th century
Formed in imitation of a tall, twisting trunk of coral issuing smaller
branches, the surface evenly covered in a brilliant orange-red lacquer,
the form towering over smaller lingzhi sprigs similarly lacquered, all
rising from a lobed jardinière set over four feet, the sides covered in
dark brown lacquer and painted in gilt and limited colors on one side
depicting two figures in a boat drifting along a river under a pine tree,
with a crane flying over a palace compound in the far distance.
