Lin Zexu (1785-1850) and Chen Baochen
(1884-1935) were two of the most important
figures in China in the 19th and early 20th
century. Both were scholars, political
philosophers, and politicians, and both served
in the Qing Court. Lin is best known for his
role in the First Opium War (1839-1842),
and Chen served as tutor and adviser of
the former emperor, Puyi, between 1912
and 1925. The calligraphy of both men has
been widely appreciated by connoisseurs
and collectors of Chinese art. Lin Duanlin
(1934-2014), also known as Tony Ling, is
the fourth-generation grandson of Lin Zexu.
He Yiwen (1926-2019) is the granddaughter
of Chen Baochen. The Lin and He families
are related by marriage and both lineages
immigrated to California, bringing important
works of Lin Zexu and Chen Baochen with
them, and preserving them in the family
for generations. These two literati family
collections reflect traditional Chinese scholarly
practice, and include treasures by renowned
masters. Bonhams is honored to present a
selection of calligraphies and manuscripts
from the Lin Duanlin and He Yiwen Family
Collections to a global audience.

林則徐 (1785-1850) 與陳寶琛( 1884-1935)，
兩位中國近代歷史上耳熟能響的名字。 一位
是晚清政治家及著名禁烟民族英雄；一位則
是末代清帝溥儀恩師。二者在政治、思想乃
至文學上兩者都有著重要地位，而出自二位
的手跡墨寶多年來也在藝術市場上受到收藏
家喜愛與競相追逐。本季邦瀚斯萬分榮幸地
為大家介紹來自這兩大姻親世家定居加利福
尼亞州後代族人的珍貴家藏。一是來自於林
則徐玄孫林端臨先生 (Tony Ling, 1934-2014)
家珍；再者是由陳寳琛外孫女何藝文女士
(1926-2019) 的私人收藏。本次拍賣會囊括了
數件林、陳的真跡手札與書法作品，希望能
為各方藏家呈現一系列代表傳統中華士大夫
文化以及藝術瑰寶。
