A RARE WHITE JADE ‘DRAGON’ AND ‘BAJIXIANG’ VASE AND
COVER, HU
18th century
Of flattened hu form, exquisitely carved in relief to each side with
a full-faced five-clawed dragon coiled around a ‘flaming pearl’ and
encircled by the eight Buddhist emblems, bajixiang amidst lush ruyi-
head clouds, all between a key-fret band at the rim and a band of
overlapping lappets at the foot, the domed cover carved with four bats
in flight amidst scrolling clouds surmounted by a knop finial in the form
of a lotus bud, the waisted neck flanked by a pair of phoenix handles,
the well-polished stone of even white tone and brown inclusions.
