Ancienne région du Gandhara, vers le IIIe siècle
A SCHIST HEAD OF A BODHISATTVA
Ancient region of Gandhara, circa 3rd century
Finely carved with full lips and heavy-lidded
eyes, the face centred by a raised urna with the flowing hair pulled over
the ushnisha and secured with an ornate beaded headband, stand.
21cm (8 1/4in) (2).
€5,000 - 7,000
Provenance:
Robert Rousset, Paris (1901-1981)
Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021)
The domed treatment of the hair is not normally associated with
Maitreya but a complete figure in the British Museum has a similar
treatment of the head, see W.Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara
Sculpture in the British Museum, 1996, no.53 (1880.218). Also
compare with a closely related example sold at Christie’s New York,
23 March 1999, lot 6 and 27 March 2003, lot 6.

TÊTE DE DÉMON EN TERRE CUITE
Ancienne région du Gandhara, vers le IVe siècle
A TERRACOTTA HEAD OF A DEMON
Ancient region of Gandhara, circa 4th century
With a glaring expression of exposed teeth and a thick furrowed brow
beneath a thick mop of dishevelled hair, stand.
22.5cm (8 7/8in) (2).
€2,000 - 3,000
Provenance:
Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021)
The head is presented on its left profile in high relief suggesting it
was part of a large narrative scene possibly relating to the Mara and
his retinue attacking the Buddha as he approached enlightenment.
The retinue of demons employed by Mara are often animal headed
or grotesque figures like the present lot. Compare with the head of a
laughing youth in the British Museum (1856,0412.1).
