           A PAIR OF LARGE PAINTED POTTERY FIGURES OF OFFICIALS
           Tang Dynasty (618-906 AD)
           Both modelled standing on a high base, wearing an armour on their
           chest decorated with floral designs and long flowing robes with long
           sleeve cuffs extending from their clasped hands, falling over their
           upturned slippers, their head fitted with a ceremonial headdress,
           traces of orange pigments.
           68cm (26 7/8in) high. (2).

           the 1980’s
           The present pair of figures is a particularly fine example, with superbly
           modelled facial details and expressions emanating a strong presence.
           A related pottery figure of a Court official, Tang dynasty, is in the Art
           Institute of Chicago (acc.no.1980.316). Compare with a related pair
           of painted pottery figures of Court officials, Tang dynasty, which was
           sold at Christie’s New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1445.

           Finely modelled, the figure elegantly standing in a swaying pose with
           hands in front of the chest, one hand revealed by the full sleeves of
           the long loose robe falling in deep folds over the pointed slippers, the
           round face detailed with pink blush over the full cheeks, a dimpled
           chin, all beneath the hair elaborately coiffed in a double-bun topknot,
           the figure covered in white slip with traces of coloured pigments.
           37cm (14 1/2in) high.

           Compare with a related painted pottery figure of a Court lady, Tang

           d’Eternite’, Paris, 1981, p.229.
