嵌十八/十九世紀刻阿拉伯文玉牌銀盒
Provenance: Agnes Deydier, Paris, 2001
來源:巴黎古董商Agnes Deydier,2001年
In the centre is an Ottoman Turkish couplet, often seen on 19th
century swords or yataghans: ‘ey gönül bir cân içün her câna minnet
eyleme, işret-i dünyâ için sultâna minnet eyleme’
Which may be translated as: ‘O heart! For the sake of one soul (i.e.
your own) do not ingratiate yourself with all souls, For the sake of the
pleasure of the world, do not ingratiate yourself with a sultan.’
Beneath this in both Persian and Turkish is the saying:
‘in niz bugzarad / bu da geçer’ meaning, ‘This too shall pass’.
