                                                                              The first with four cartouches variously
                                                                              enclosing floral sprays, rockwork, birds,
                                                                              lingzhi fungus and peaches, alternating with
                                                                              butterflies above demi-flowerheads, between
                                                                              a key-fret around the foot and shoulders, the
                                                                              reticulated cover decorated with antiques
                                                                              reserved on a wan ground bordered by floral
                                                                              scrolls, the sides with the ‘Three Friends of
                                                                              Winter’, pine, prunus and bamboo, with a
                                                                              double arch handle decorated with nodes
                                                                              simulating bamboo; the second of canted
                                                                              square form, similarly decorated around the
                                                                              sides with cartouches alternating with vases
                                                                              bearing floral sprays, the reticulated cover with
                                                                              floral blossoms alternating with bats against
                                                                              foliate ground, the sides with a key-fret border,
                                                                              with a similar double handle.

                                                                              Weiling zuo three-character mark, Qing
                                                                              Dynasty
                                                                              The cylindrical vessel cast in relief to each side
                                                                              with a lobed panel depicting a snake entwined
                                                                              around a turtle before tumultuous waves,
                                                                              divided by wispy cloud scrolls, within borders
                                                                              of archaistic dragon panels and bosses to
                                                                              the upper and lower rims, archaistic three-
                                                                              character inscription to the base.

                                                                              「衛靈作」篆書款

                                                                              The inscription on the base can be read: 衛靈
                                                                              作, meaning ‘manufactured by Wei Ling’.

                                                                              The Black Tortoise or Black Turtle (Xuanwu 玄
                                                                              武) is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese
                                                                              constellations. Despite its English name, it is
                                                                              usually depicted as a turtle entwined together
                                                                              with a snake. Furthermore, in Chinese
                                                                              mythology it is associated with and sometimes
                                                                              simply known as the ‘Black Warrior’, Xuanwu,
