the exterior powerfully carved in raised relief with
three wide bands depicting taotie masks framed
by symmetrical archaistic kuilong, the curved
dragon body reduced to sylised scrolls, encircled
at the foot with a narrower band of similar
decoration, each band with raised flanges in relief
at the four sides, all reserved on a crisply carved
leiwen ground, covered overall in a teadust glaze
of brown tone to simulate the patina of bronze,
splashed with robin’s-egg turquoise and green
enamels to mimic encrustation, the brown-glazed
base impressed with a six-character seal mark
within a square, the zitan wood stands deftly
carved with archaistic taotie masks echoing the
decoration of the vase, together with a negative
on glass dating from the late 19th century
41.5 cm, 16⅜ in.
