A RARE WOOD POWDER FLASK
By Ga’no (born 1789), Suo Province,
first half of the 19th century
The flask of typically flattened form, simulating
a leather pouch, carved on either side with
scrolled panels, with a dragon amid clouds
over swirling water in sunk relief, the upper
part of ebony, the spout and stopper of
buffalo-horn; signed Ga’no with a kao.

and base carved with large chrysanthemum
blooms; signed Izumi Bunzo chokoku (carved
