A LINGBI ‘LUOHAN AND LION’ SCHOLAR’S ROCK

QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

The exquisitely formed stone is wrought out to stand horizontally
on two points, resembling the monumental presence of a Luohan
seated atop a powerful lion. The lion’s body ascends upward, a
slight protrusion in the profile evokes the head with its mouth
agape exposing the fierce jaws. The rock further rises to climax in a
pyramidal fashion reminiscent of a Luohan arrayed gracefully atop the
lion’s back. The stone is of a deep grey tone, including considerable
quantities of calcite, disposed as both veins and inclusions, while some
edges of the latter often shading to buff.
