A SMALL ‘BAMBOO SHOOT’ SCHOLAR’S ROCK

QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

The stone is vertically oriented with a flat base rising to a narrowing
top, the surface with numerous horizontal striations, several of which
are particularly pronounced, reminiscent of the skin of a bamboo
shoot. The stone is of a pale russet-brown tone.
4º in. (10.9 cm.) high, wood stand, Japanese wood box

Compare to a small petrified bamboo rock with multiple horizontal
linear ridges, in the Ian and Susan Wilson Collection, fitted on a stand
inscribed with a poem by Qu Yungshan (1780-1849), illustrated in Spirit
