A WHITE AND BLACK SCHOLAR’S ROCK
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
Of an irregular rectangular form, the horizontal rock resembles a
mountainscape traversed by twisting canyons and jutting peaks. The
surface is enlivened with deep furrows, scalloped indentations and
an intricate pattern of attractive crevasses. The white stone includes
significant quantities of black inclusions, disposed both as thin
continuous veins and as discrete pockets.
12 in. (30 cm.) long, wood stand, Japanese wood box
HK$120,000-180,000 US$16,000-23,000
The current horizontally-oriented stone would probably have been
displayed vertically in a Chinese scholar’s studio. It is a good example of
the flexibility in display of scholar’s rocks, which can be appreciated from
different angles, each conjuring up a different interpretations.
清 墨白雙色賞石
此賞石在日本藏家手中以橫放姿態擺設,但以前在中國文房裏非常有可能
被豎立擺放,正有「橫看成嶺側成峰,遠近高底各不同」之妙趣。
