ANONYMOUS, AFTER LIU SONGNIAN (ACTIVE 1175-AFTER The present lot is based on an album leaf originally by Liu Songnian
1295), INSTRUCTING THE PRINCE (active 1175-after 1295) and now in the collection of the National
18th/19th century Palace Museum, Taipei. A second similar composition, formerly
Horizontal handscroll, ink and color on silk, bearing an inscription in the attributed to the Song Dynasty Emperor Huizong (1082-1135), and
style of Song Emperor Huizong and several spurious seals. featuring a similar slender gold inscription as the present lot, is in the
10 1/4 x 44 1/2in (26 x 113cm) collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (13.220.89), acquired in
1913. That scroll is presently dated as “Ming/Qing dynasty”.
