‘BAJIXIANG’ BARREL-FORM
STANDS
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
Each is of barrel form, carved around the
sides with the Bajixiang, ‘Eight Buddhist
Emblems’ tied with ribbons amidst cloud
scrolls, between bands of ruyi-heads, the
top is carved with swirling clouds pierced
with a coin motif in the centre, all covered
with a lustrous glaze of soft celadon tone.

The ovoid vessel is moulded with an
overall design of peonies and scrolling
foliage between bands of ruyi heads to the
shoulders and stylised lappets to the base.
