This exquisite tray is notable for its intricate inlaid design.
The tiny pieces of shell have been patiently mapped into
place to create the scene of ladies on a boat, and the vibrancy
of the scene is heightened by the iridescent sheen of the
shell. Another tray of this form and design is in the Itsuo Art
Museum, included in the exhibition Chinese Arts of the Ming
and Ch’ing Periods, Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo, 1981, cat.
no. 59. See also another example, also preserved in Japan,
sold in our London rooms, 6th November 2013, lot 366.

Another early Ming cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover
of larger size from the collection of the Kaisendo museum,
similarly carved with peony flowers, was sold in these rooms,
11th July 2020, lot 3632. A closely related polychrome lacquer
box from the Qing court collection, preserved in the Palace
Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of
Treasures of the Palace Museum. Lacquer Wares of the Yuan
and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 49.
