 MING DYNASTY, 15TH – 16TH CENTURY  QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD  Palace Museum, Beijing, such as a lacquer box carved with
 of eight-lobed foliate form, the interior inlaid with mother-of-  of compressed circular form, the domed cover meticulously   dragons, illustrated in Zhongguo bowuyuan can diaoqi/Carved
 pearl depicting two elegant ladies on a boat admiring a lotus   carved with five ferocious scaly dragons writhing amidst   Lacquer in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1985, pl. 311. Two other
 pond scenery surrounded by birds and willow, encircled by a   tumultuous swirling waves and flames, the box similarly carved   lacquer boxes are preserved in the National Palace Museum,
 dense composite floral scroll, all reserved on a black ground,   with five striding dragons in mutual pursuit of flaming pearls,   Taipei, and were included in the Museum’s exhibition Carving
 the base lacquered black, Japanese wood box  the interior and base lacquered black, the rims mounted in gilt-  the Subtle Radiance of Colors, Treasured Lacquerware in the
 25.4 cm, 10 in.  metal, Japanese wood box              National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, cat. nos 133 and 135.

 This exquisite tray is notable for its intricate inlaid design.
 The tiny pieces of shell have been patiently mapped into
 place to create the scene of ladies on a boat, and the vibrancy
 of the scene is heightened by the iridescent sheen of the
 shell. Another tray of this form and design is in the Itsuo Art
 Museum, included in the exhibition Chinese Arts of the Ming
 and Ch’ing Periods, Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo, 1981, cat.
 no. 59. See also another example, also preserved in Japan,
 sold in our London rooms, 6th November 2013, lot 366.

 CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
 MING DYNASTY, 15TH – 16TH CENTURY
 the domed cover with a large peony blossom wreathed by
 lush foliage, the shallow sides with floral buds and blooms
 alternating with large leaves, the interior and base lacquered
 dark brown, Japanese wood box
 7 cm, 2¾ in.

 Another early Ming cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover
 of larger size from the collection of the Kaisendo museum,
 similarly carved with peony flowers, was sold in these rooms,
 11th July 2020, lot 3632. A closely related polychrome lacquer
 box from the Qing court collection, preserved in the Palace
 Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of
 Treasures of the Palace Museum. Lacquer Wares of the Yuan
 and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 49.
