MOKUAN SHOTO (1611-1684) A poem, written by the mountain monk Obaku Mokuan in the
EDO PERIOD, 1672 spring of 1672
木庵性瑫(1611 – 1684)、江戸時代、1672年 All creatures in clear weather now, enjoying blue-green
fragrance;
hanging scroll, ink on paper, with a running script poem of Forests, streams overflow the eye with omens of good fortune!
horizontal format (yokomono), dated 1672, with three seals Awakened from samadhi, wandering the forest, meeting a
27 x 68.8 cm, 10⅝ x 27⅛ in. treasured friend:
Knee to knee, discussing feelings ‘til the sun goes down.
PROVENANCE
Beyond the railing, Heaven’s corona sends floatingly light rain;
Manpukuji Temple, Kyoto Before the blinds, swallows chatter endlessly of spring.
Clearly, now, no longer obscured, the young lady’s vision:
No now she’s permitted to enter the Gate, to examine the
Dharma-King
景物風情弄翠香
林泉溢目發禛祥
定回徒林逢佳客
膝促論懷到夕陽
檻外天華飄細雨
簾前燕子語春長
分明不昧娘生眼
却許入門勘法王
