                                                                              right, wearing tassel-pendant collars and with
                                                                              flamiform motifs to the haunches, with tightly
                                                                              curled hair, open mouths and protruding
                                                                              tongues, set on separate openwork plinths,
                                                                              variously with a brocade ball and playful cub.

                                                                              Erik Engels (1924-2017) was the senior
                                                                              curator of the Ulricehamn East Asian
                                                                              Museum, Sweden from 1995 to 2008. He
                                                                              founded the Klubb Ming Tzu in 1975 to
                                                                              promote knowledge on Chinese history,
                                                                              culture and works of art.

                                                                              Each panel variously enamelled with flowers
                                                                              of the four seasons, chrysanthemum, peony,

                                                                              with a further lotus flower head meander, all
                                                                              reserved a black enamel ground.
