Seated with the heads turned to left and
right, wearing tassel-pendant collars and with
flamiform motifs to the haunches, with tightly
curled hair, open mouths and protruding
tongues, set on separate openwork plinths,
variously with a brocade ball and playful cub.

SQUARE TAPERING VASE
Kangxi six-character mark, 19th century
Each face variously enamelled with lotus,
chrysanthemum, peony and prunus issuing
from rockwork, with insects and butterflies in
flight, the shoulder and cylindrical flaring neck
with birds perched amongst further foliage.

The collection of Erik Engels
Erik Engels (1924-2017) was the senior
curator of the Ulricehamn East Asian
Museum, Sweden from 1995 to 2008. He
founded the Klubb Ming Tzu in 1975 to
promote knowledge on Chinese history,
culture and works of art.

Chenghua six-character mark, Kangxi
Each panel variously enamelled with flowers
of the four seasons, chrysanthemum, peony,
prunus and lotus, the shoulder and neck
with a further lotus flower head meander, all
reserved a black enamel ground.
