A RARE CARVED GREEN AND RED JADEITE SNUFF BOTTLE
1800-1900
The bottle is carved on one side with the poet Li Bo resting with one hand raised holding
a rhyton drinking cup which forms the mouth of the bottle in the green area of the stone.
The reverse is carved through the red-colored area with a chained Buddhist lion with
a bushy tail that wraps below Li Bo.
2¿ in. (5.3 cm.) high, silver stopper and spoon
$10,000-15,000
PROVENANCE
The Gerry P. Mack Collection.
Robert Kleiner, Belfont Company Ltd., Hong Kong, 2001.
Ruth and Carl Barron Collection, Belmont, Massachusetts, no. 3119.
The current bottle is very rare for its bold fgural carving, heightened by the use of
two-tone jadeite and the contrast created by the two colors. The carver masterfully
used the break from one color to defne the fgure of poet Li Bo.
