covered overall with a lustrous black glaze,
su used with irregular metallic russet ‘oil-spots’,
the glaze falling short of the foot to leave an
unglazed area covered with dark brown slip

GLAZED DISH

the shallow rounded sides rising from a short
slightly splayed foot to an everted rim, decorated
overall with a mottled brownish-black glaze and
transparent glaze over white slip in producing of
an unusual color contrast resembling yin-yang,
the foot rim left unglazed revealing the pale bu -
colored stoneware body
Diameter 5¾ in., 14.6 cm
It is rare to nd Cizhou wares with the same
design as the present dish, although a meiping,
decorated in the same style, in the Kai-Yin Lo
Collection, is included in the exhibition Bright as
Silver. White as Snow. Chinese White Ceramics
from Late Tang to Yuan Dynasty, Denver Art
Museum, Denver, 1998, pl. 26.
