JUN ROTARY COIMBATORE MIDTOWN
           18

It truly was a ‘Home Coming’ for me and Shanthi – A grand reception with Aarthi and floral welcome
by the Anns accompanied by a band was equal to the reception given to a favourite Son-in-law of the
house. The Rotarians were dressed in Golden colour Indian Jackets and the Anns were resplendent in
Golden colour sarees celebrating the club’s Golden Jubilee year.
Rotary Coimbatore Midtown is always known for the massive community service projects they do
every year and which they have being doing for the last 50 years. This year also the super dynamic
team of President Krishna Kumar and Secretary C V Sriram have completed more than 40 projects
worth about a Crore of rupees and walked the extra mile to make the Golden Jubilee Year more
memorable. What more the super active Ann’s Team ably led by their partners Vanisri Krishnakumar
and Malathi Sriram have walked along their husbands throughout the year and done some fabulous
projects like donation of a 4 wheel cart to a food seller, 115 Slogam classes organized and various
                   family activities.
To celebrate the Golden Jubilee Year 70000 Bambusa Bamboo saplings were distributed costing over
7 Lakhs. 3 concrete benches were provided at the R.S.Puram Post Office along with 1 at Devanga
High School. Charter Secretary Suresh Gokuldas sponsored 3.50 lakhs for the water tank at the
Govt School at Vagarampalyam in memory of the Charter President Late PDG Jagatheesan. Another
outstanding project was the Rotary Midtown Biodiversity Park in a 1 acre plot along with the NHAI –
a Milwalki Forest with more than 100 native trees have been planted with the generous support by
Rtn. Chandrasekar and othern midtowners of over Rupees 15 lakhs. A very unique project iROTREE
jointly with ESRAG and Rotary Mettupalayam to promote and record the various green projects done
by all Rotarians in over 14 RI Districts across the globe was launched by RI President Sekhar Mehta
a few months back. I must here mention the efforts of Rtn Sathyamoorthy who not only envisaged
this project but also sponsored 7.5 Lakhs for it. Some other projects done were training of over 200
nurses for Covid vaccination, vaccination of over 150 dogs and cats on World Rabies Day, a X Ray unit
given to PHC at SS Kulam, solar panel and bore well fitted for a water trough at Mettupalayam for
the forest animals, renovation of the Govt primary School, Barli which caters to the Tribal Children
and a Medical Lab and outpatient counter built at a cost of 8 lakhs at Veerapandi PHC – which were
inaugurated in the morning of the GOV.
Nine new members have been inducted into the Midtown family this year. The Club has also sponsored
2 new Rotary Clubs – Rotary E Club of Coimbatore Changemakers and Rotary Coimbatore Royals. I
must appreciate the outstanding efforts of Dist. Membership Chair Rtn. C T Thiagarajan . Must also
mention Rtn. Srinivasan Sriram who like his father Late VV Sriraman continues to visit SLM Home every
week to administer Polio Drops. In their 2 Vocational Training Centres where Tailoring classes and Tally
training have been given for many years – this year over 140 ladies have been trained and also 15
sewing machines were given to deserving ladies. Through their signature project ‘Project Walk Again’
537 artificial limbs have been distributed and are within the touching distance of the magic figure of
25,000 limbs distributed since the inception of the project in 1990. Appreciate the dedication of Baboo
Kannan, Pragash Angappan and Team. I must also specially mention the outstanding dedication of
President Krishna Kumar in distributing 100 packets of food every week for the last 50 weeks in spite of
his professional commitments which take him all over the country. Bhoomi Puja has been done for the
“Golden Jubilee Building” which is to house a Meeting Hall, Artificial Limb Manufacturing Centre and
a Vocational Training Centre at the Club owned land at Saravanampatty, Coimbatore.
Over all the Home Club Official Visit was a very satisfying one, the final Gov was indeed a grand finale.
