Flash Lighting
DSLR cameras come with a popup flash and without any other flash system can help
most of the time, but the problem is the flash is directed in front of your subject. This
can cause harsh shadows and too many highlights.

A Speedlight/Flash Head is recommended to have better control of the light. These
units can attach to the camera hot shoe or they can be placed on the floor or elsewhere
               and triggered wired or wireless.

Speedlight’s come in a variety of types and vary in cost from 50-80 dollars to hundreds.
Brand name Speedlight’s are apt to be more expensive but if you are just starting with
flash or are on a budget, there are plenty of Speedlight’s made for your camera model. I
have found these will perform nearly all the functions of more expensive brands.

               Tips on Using a Speedlight

                   1. Always check that you have fresh batteries and spares
                   2. Meter Through the Lens (TTL) and ensure your flash in camera settings is set to
TTL as well as the Speedlight.
                   3. Look at your model and decide how you want to light the area.
                   4. Bounce the flash. Do not point the flash head directly at your model. By bouncing
the light, you create a new light source, from a wall, ceiling or some other
structure. Tilt and or swivel the head until you get the lighting affect you want.
                   5. Caution using the flash head straight up. This can create shadows under the eyes
and nose. Angle the flash to fill those areas you want more light.
                   6. Remember that the flash can impart an unwanted color cast in the image. For
example, a woman in a white gown with the flash pointed up to a purple ceiling.
                   7. To improve the light on the eyes, use the card that pulls out of the flash head.
This is for catch light and reflects some of that light back to the model.
                   8. Use a diffuser to soften the light. Many Speedlight’s come with this but if not can
                       be purchased separately.
