Sharing Data—Harvesting, Linking, and Distribution

Once generated, files are loaded into a MarcEditor, as seen in figure
7.6. Files harvested from the IR present a number of challenges. The prob-
lems primarily fell into two categories: (1) a system process will modify an
item’s metadata time stamp, incorrectly marking it for harvest, and (2) both
controlled and uncontrolled subject terms are stored in the same MODS
element, requiring additional processing to produce a good record. Once
within the MarcEditor, staff have the ability to edit records individually or
globally using one of a number of built-in tools. At ORST, the process of
editing the generated metadata has varied from utilizing external scripts to
clean up the generated metadata content, to utilizing MarcEdit’s built-in
macro language to edit content strictly within the application.
