While the XML record is admittedly more verbose, its
use of human-readable tagging and hierarchical structure
allows this record to be easily read and parsed by human
eyes. While one could perhaps guess the title of the docu-
ment described in the MARC record, the XML document
leaves no doubt about this, since the title of the document
is actually found within an XML tag marked as “title.” This
level of data transparency is a big benefit of using non-
binary data, since the data format, structure, and relation-
ships can be easily inspected and understood by experts and
novices alike.
