Patient complains of an uncomfortable feeling in his stomach.
With the test results as well as samples of the patient’s urine and
stool, you estimate he has heartburn. Please give a brief
diagnosis by using expressions appearing in this lesson.
G. Culture tip
Western patients generally expect a complete and honest prognosis. They
do not want disturbing information hidden from them. That does not mean
that they enjoy receiving bad news. When a doctor does have to deliver
troubling information, it should be done honestly, but sensitively. The
doctor should use appropriate words—and gestures and facial
expressions–to express sympathy. The doctor is expected to empathize
with the patient, not to be a disinterested technician.
