1. Doctor Now, Mr. Smith, your blood pressure is a bit high – 150/95.
Anything over 140/90 is considered high. And the results of the eye
examination show that there is a narrowing of the small red blood
vessels in your eyes. The lab results show that your creatinine and
cholesterol levels are also a bit high. As a result, you are considered
a mildly hypertensive patient.
2. Patient Oh, right?
3. Doctor You will need to follow an appropriate diet—30% fat, 55%
carbohydrates, 15% protein. Less than 300 mg of cholesterol per
day and less than 10% saturated fat per day. You should also watch
your salt intake. Here’s a sample diet.
4. Patient Okay.
5.Doctor You also need to exercise regularly, three or four times a week.
Work out for about 30 minutes each time. Aerobics, fast-paced
walking, swimming, something like that.
6. Patient Okay.
7. Doctor Is there anything else you’d like to tell me or ask me?
8. Patient Um, will I need to take any medication?
9. Doctor We’ll wait and see. First, we will try to control this with diet and
exercise. That should do the trick. If that doesn’t work, there are
several different medications we could try. We will cross that
bridge when we come to it. In the meantime, let’s try the diet and
exercise.
10. Patient OK.
