Explaining a Diagnosis

Tips on explaining diagnoses
1. Give clear information about your diagnosis;
Explain the examination results;
Demonstrate your empathy when appropriate;
Seek the patient’s point of view; inquire about any concerns the patient may have;
Don’t give the patient false information or false reassurance.
2. When you close any encounter with a patient you should:
Provide a summary of what the patient has told you;
Be sure to let the patient have the last word or ask any additional questions;
Give a pleasant thank you and goodbye.
