F. Role-Play
Situation 1
Student A: play the part of the doctor. Explain the diagnoses to the patients.
Student B: play the part of the patients.
1. A 45-year-old housewife with fibroids.
2. A 25-year-old student suffering from heartburn.
3. A 65-year-old worker with temporal arthritis.
4. A 31-year-old accountant affected by epilepsy.
Situation 2
Student A: play the part of the doctor. Make a diagnosis based on the information below.
Student B: play the part of the patients. Ask necessary questions concerning the patients’
situation.
The patient is a 26-year-old woman with a headache, sore
throat and enlarged glands in the neck. The spleen is palpable
and there is a maculopapular rash all over. The WBC shows
lymphocytes ++. Monospot is positive.
G. Culture tip
Western patients may sometimes ask penetrating questions and even ask for a second
medical opinion in the case of being diagnosed with a serious disease or condition. The
doctor should not resent such behavior. It is not meant to challenge the doctor’s
competence. Such questioning is standard practice in many Western countries.
