F. Role-play
Situation 1
Student A: play the part of the doctor. You’ve already performed a cholecystogram on Mr.
Smith. You find stones in his gall bladder. Explain to Mr. Smith what you have
done.
Student B: play the part of Mr. Smith. Ask the doctor to explain the lab procedures and the
cause of your problem.
Situation 2
The patient complains of a sharp pain in his ankle. As a doctor, you suggest that the patient
have an X-ray first. Explain the purpose of the X-ray and what will be done during the test
to your patient.
G. Culture tip
Western patients expect complete information about their illness, its cause and the
prognosis. The doctor needs to explain all of these items, using layman’s terms, while
avoiding medical terminology.
