F. Role-play
Work in pairs.
Student A: play the part of the doctor;
Student B: Play the part of the patient. Perform a focused physical examination. Explain
briefly what you intend to do to the patient and his present condition.
Situations
1. A 20-year-old woman complaining of a cough for one week;
2. A 36-year-old man suffering from lower abdominal pain;
3. A 56-year-old retired teacher with back pain;
4. A 65-year-old woman with hearing loss;

Western patients expect a verbal acknowledgement of their compliance with instructions.
When the doctor is giving a series of instructions ( “Raise your arm; put it behind you; now
put it in front of you…”), those instructions should be interspersed with verbal
acknowledgements such as:
Good.
That’s right.
Fine.
Mmm, now…
