Raw materials dominate Ukraine’s agro-exports in 9M18, finished goods still lagging Ukraine exported grain worth $4.8bn in the first nine months of this year, but it still lags behind in producing and exporting processed and finished agricultural products, according to the Ukrainian Food Export Board (UFEB). "Raw materials continue to be key export staples. At the same time, these products follow global environmental trends as both production and sales of organic products are growing. Noteworthy, although now our key export commodities are raw materials, we have a significant potential for sales of finished products abroad. Ukrainian manufacturers are able to create high-quality products that will be competitive on the global market. In particular, this is evidenced by growing chocolate exports," the UFEB press service said in a statement on October 9. Exports of poultry meat, chocolate, soybean oil, rapeseed, and wheat increased most year-over-year, up by 29%, 21%, 18%, 15%, and 6%, respectively. The traditional grain crops exports still top the ranking worth $4.8bn. Shipments of fats and oils, as well as ready-to-use edible fats and wax worth $3.2bn ranked second. Then come exports of seeds and fruit of oil plants, straw and fodder, estimated at $1.4bn, meat and edible offal exports worth $478.9mn, as well as exports of milk and dairy products, eggs and natural honey. Total revenue from Ukrainian farmers' exports in 2017 rose by 16% to almost $18bn y/y.
Ukraine exported 10.2 mmt of grain since the beginning of the 2018/19
marketing year starting in July, or a 9.0% decrease y/y as of October 10, the Agrarian Ministry reported that day. Ukraine exported 6.0 mmt of wheat, 2.2 mmt of barley and 1.7 mmt of corn. “We expect grain exports to pick up throughout the rest of the marketing year, as a higher harvest of spring crops is anticipated. Recall, grain exports dropped 11% y/y in the 2017/18 season. If the price situation on the external markets is favorable, the growth in exported grain volume should positively affect Ukraine’s current account balance. In 2017, grains made up 15% of Ukraine’s goods exports,” Evgeniya Akhtyrk of Concorde Capital said in a note.
Exports of walnuts, a new Ukrainian niche product, are up 83%, to $67mn
through July, compared to the same period last year. Last year, the EU bought 60% of Ukraine’s walnut exports. Over the last two years, Ukraine’s walnut plantations have expanded by about one quarter, adding 4,500 hectares, writes Olha Trofimtseva, deputy agriculture minister. With more plantations and processing plants underway, Ukraine is expected to displace Chile next year as the world’s third largest walnut producer, after China and the US.
Exports of goods through July were up 13% y/y, hitting $27bn , the Economic Development and Trade Ministry reports. Exports to the EU,
