                                                                                Dolphin Drilling has started drilling for General
                                                                                Hydrocarbons Ltd offshore Nigeria using the
                                                                                Blackford Dolphin rig.
                                                                                  In 2022, it was announced that General
                                                                                Hydrocarbons, an oil and gas services company
                                                                                that started operations in Nigeria in 2009, had
                                                                                been awarded a $96mn contract for a 12-month
                                                                                period. On March 21, 2023 Dolphin Drilling
                                                                                revealed that the drilling contract had begun.
                                                                                  The rig, which underwent recertification for
                                                                                a new five-year period in Las Palmas, Spain, will
                                                                                target the reworking of existing wells on the Oyo
                                                                                field, with the potential to drill on new prospects.
                                                                                Once its contract with General Hydrocarbons is
                                                                                complete, the rig will remain in Nigeria to work
                                                                                with Peak Petroleum at a higher day rate.
                                                                                  The Oyo field was previously licensed to Erin
                                                                                Energy, but the company went bankrupt in 2018.
                                                                                  Dolphin Drilling is best known for its record
                                                                                of deepwater drilling in harsh environments and
                                                                                owns three fourth and fifth-generation drilling
                                                                                rigs.
