Dolphin Drilling commences
drilling operations at Oyo
field offshore Nigeria
Dolphin Drilling has started drilling for General
Hydrocarbons Ltd offshore Nigeria using the
Blackford Dolphin rig.
In 2022, it was announced that General
Hydrocarbons, an oil and gas services company
that started operations in Nigeria in 2009, had
been awarded a $96mn contract for a 12-month
period. On March 21, 2023 Dolphin Drilling
revealed that the drilling contract had begun.
The rig, which underwent recertification for
a new five-year period in Las Palmas, Spain, will
target the reworking of existing wells on the Oyo
field, with the potential to drill on new prospects.
Once its contract with General Hydrocarbons is
complete, the rig will remain in Nigeria to work
with Peak Petroleum at a higher day rate.
The Oyo field was previously licensed to Erin
Energy, but the company went bankrupt in 2018.
Dolphin Drilling is best known for its record
of deepwater drilling in harsh environments and
owns three fourth and fifth-generation drilling
rigs.
