straddling the shore of the Gydan Peninsula. According to an online tender notice, the
company has invited bids for the construction of the R-60 well at the Geo zichesky contract area. e borehole will be drilled a depth of 2,700 metres near the shore of the ob Bay,
in order to determine whether a previously identi ed onshore Jurassic reservoir extends into the block’s western o shore section.
Novatek acquired exploration and production rights in 2011 to the Geo zichesky block, which contains the Geo zicheskoye eld discovered in 1975. e company wants to exploit the gas resources at Geo zicheskoye as well as its other deposits on Gydan – Utrenneye, Gydanskoye, Shtormovoye and Ladertoyskoye – to underpin the development of its 19.5 million tonne per year Arctic LNG- 2 terminal and other export projects in the area.
Novatek plans to sink an additional o shore borehole at Geo zichesky, R-65,
due for completion by September. In the notice, the. company it would accept o ers from contractors for the R-60 well until July 5, and its selection would be announced by August 30. e Geo zichesky block is remote, without road links, and so a drilling rig and support equipment will have to be delivered to the site this summer via sea. A temporary road will also be constructed to the drilling site during the winter.
Geo zchesky holds 128.7bn cubic
metres of natural gas and 436,000 tonnes of condensate in proven reserves, according
to data published in Novatek’s last quarterly report. In contrast its largest eld on Gydan, Utrenneye, contains 416.6 bcm in proven gas that will serve as the primary resource for Arctic LNG-2.
Total cites Arctic LNG 2 cost savings
Total has said cost savings will be made on the Arctic LNG 2 plant as a result of Saipem technology. As a result, the cost will be reduced by around one third than Yamal LNG, Reuters quoted the French company as saying.
e plant will use gravity-based structure (GBS) platforms, which are being built in Murmansk. e Yamal LNG plant cost US$27 billion. Novatek, which has a 70% stake in Arctic LNG 2, has said the plant will cost US$20-21 billion. It is expected to start operating in 2022-23, with capacity of 19.8 million tpy.
US calls for Ireland to move from peat to LNG
A US o cial has advised Ireland to cut its peat use and shi to LNG. e US under secretary for energy, Mark Menezes, was widely quoted in the Irish media for his remarks during a brie ng in dublin.
“You have peat that you continue to use for electricity generation. at’s not good for the environment,” Menezes was quoted as saying by Green News. “I would suggest look to bring in US LNG to replace your peat, and if you want to minimise your coal use, that is a quick way right there.”
A plan is under way for an LNG regas unit to be built in Ireland. New Fortress Energy’s Shannon LNG plan, which originated under Hess, was described by Menezes as a “great opportunity”. Work on the import plan is under legal scrutiny as local environmental groups have criticised its location.
CDP endorses LNG for decarbonising shipping
e world’s shipping heavyweights are not investing in key technologies to reduce their carbon footprint, with the sector at risk of
not meeting the International Maritime organization’s (IMo) targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050. is is revealed in a new report ‘A Sea Change’ from the environmental non-pro t and investment research provider CdP today. e report ranks 18 of the largest publicly listed shipping companies, representing US$62 billion of market capitalisation, on business readiness for a low-carbon transition.
LNG plays a signi cant role as a transition fuel in the IEA’s below 2°C scenarios,
presenting a growth opportunity for ships carrying LNG out to 2040. 10 companies are actively facilitating the development of LNG marine fuel through collaborations or integration of LNG-ready vessels into their eet.
LNG with a signi cant role as a transition fuel in the IEA’s Sustainable development Scenario (SdS) for below 2°C presents a growth opportunity for LNG carriers out to 2040. Bulk and tanker companies exposed to thermal coal and oil product transport are more at risk from decarbonisation trends. CDP, june 25, 2019
‘LNG London’ bunker vessel begins operations in Europe
e LNG London (which is owned by LNG Shipping – a cooperation between Victrol and Sogestran) is on long-term charter to Shell. It will primarily be used by Shell for LNG bunkering in the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp.
“ e entry into service of LNG London shows our ability and commitment to providing safe and reliable supplies that help meet the growing need for cleaner-burning fuel,” Tahir Faruqui, General Manager, Shell Global downstream LNG, said. “We are pleased to have three LNG bunker vessels in our eet and look forward to others joining them in the future.”
Gisèle Buelens, CEo of Victrol, said: “In 2017, Shell selected us to build an inland LNG bunker vessel. As pioneers in bunker vessels, we designed a completely new vessel that complies with the latest safety and operational requirements. We are pleased that she has completed her rst operation and that many more LNG bunkering operations will take place in the years ahead.”
Pascal Girardet, CEo of Sogestran, said:
