The next biggest export partner are the Netherlands (although that is largely because the Netherlands is a favourite legal domicile for Russian companies abroad) which accounted for 10.6% of exports and Germany which accounts for 6.6% of exports worth $30.3bn.
China also leads the imports to Russia followed by Germany (10.3%, $27.3bn) and the USA (5.4%, $14.2bn). Like China Russia has a very balanced trade partnership with Germany and the USA (the eight largest export market: 3%, $14.4bn).
Of note is the residual trade surplus Russia has with Ukraine which accounts for 1.7% of its exports worth $7.9bn, but from which it receives 2% of its imports worth $5.3bn – a trade surplus of about $2bn a year.
Belarus also features surprisingly high in Russia’s trade regime given the republic’s small size: Belarus is Russia’s fifth largest export market (4.7%, $21.8bn) and fourth largest importer (5.1%, $13.4bn) but this trade includes hydrocarbon transits and the fact that Belarus has become a transit country for European goods on their way into Russia.
Turkey is also notable as the fourth largest export market (5%, $23bn) and imports (tenth largest: 2%, $5.4bn) but runs a significant trade deficit with Russia, partly due to the fact that Russia’s a major supply of gas for the country.
